This paper concerns the applications of a method of modeling the mechanism of shrinkage in porous elastic materials. Examples of the effects of shrinkage in porous elastic materials include the cracks that appear in the sun-dried gumbo at the bottom of a former mud puddle or in concrete, and the warping and cracking of drying lumber. The model for shrinkage is applied here for drying wood, but with an emphasis on the method and the generality of the results with regard to shrinkage in other materials. The model is able to predict the stresses, strains, deformation, and warping associated with wood drying.
