Abstract

General recognition of the possibilities of gear and shaft transmissions would free the designer from the limitations imposed by the fixed-unit power plant and appreciably broaden the field of aircraft design. Against these advantages are the weight and many engineering problems. The author discusses the most important problems from the standpoint of transmission design and suggests methods of meeting them. Working stresses, torsional vibration, dynamic balancing of long shafts, flexible couplings, and splines receive attention.
